If you literally translate un cerf-volant into English, it means “a flying deer”. Can you imagine a flying deer? I don’t. Well, a cerf-volant simply refers to a kite. This word comes from the Old French (Occitan) “serp-volante”, “serp” referring to a snake or dragon. And it’s true, kites in the air look a bit more like flying snakes or dragons than flying deers!
