Faire le pont is an expression used to describe a four-day long weekend. It dates back to the Second Empire and literally means “to make the bridge”. It refers to the image of the bridge that allows people to go from one bank to another, and, by extension, from one day to another.
If the holiday is a Thursday or a Tuesday, you can take the Friday, respectively the Monday, off and have a long weekend! This is faire le pont. So, are you going to have a four-day weekend ? Allez-vous faire le pont ?
